Stroke

Stroke is a cerebrovascular condition that occurs when poor blood flow to the brain results in cell death.  The main risk factor for stroke is high blood pressure, and other risk factors include tobacco use, obesity, high cholesterol, and diabetes.  The NWHU monitors local rates of hospitalization and mortality from stroke.

Hospitalization

Hospitalizations due to stroke were statistically significantly higher in the NWHU area compared with Ontario as a whole from 2010 to 2014. The average rate in the NWHU area was 124.8 hospitalizations per 100,000 per year and 79.6 per 100,000 per year in the province. The rate showed a relatively stable trend in Ontario while the NWHU region had a slight drop in 2013 and a subsequent increase within 2014.

As well, during this time period stroke hospitalizations occurred at a higher rate in males than females (138.1 hospitalizations per 100,000 per year vs 112.4 hospitalizations per 100,000 per year), and were most common in people 75 years of age and older (1228.3 hospitalizations per 100,000 per year).

Mortality

Mortality rates due to stroke were not significantly different in the NWHU area compared with the province from 2007 to 2011. The average rate in the NWHU area was 23.7 deaths per 100,000 per year and in Ontario the rate was 21.5 deaths per 100,000 per year.  There was a slight decline seen in the province, whereas there was greater fluctuation in the NWHU region during this time period.

Mortality from stroke was slightly more common in males, with an average of 25.1 deaths per 100,000 per year between 2007 and 2011.  However, this was not statistically different from the female rate of 21.1 per 100,000 per year. During the same time period, the highest rate was amongst seniors 75 years of age and older, with an average of 408.8 deaths per 100,000 per year.
