Respiratory diseases-Overview

Respiratory diseases refer to a broad category encompassing diseases that occur in the lungs, upper respiratory tract, trachea and other organs used in breathing (this category excludes lung cancer, which falls into a category with other cancers).  The NWHU monitors trends in respiratory diseases in the area, in terms of people being hospitalized as well as mortality rates.

Hospitalization

From 2010 to 2014, hospitalization rates for respiratory diseases were almost twice as high in the NWHU area than Ontario as a whole. The average rate in this time provincially was 512.4 cases per 100,000 per year, compared with 957.3 cases per 100, 000 per year in the NWHU area. Both areas exhibited steady hospitalization rates overtime, with a slight increase in in the last two years for Ontario and the last three years for the NWHU.

On average, males had slightly higher hospitalization rates at 1027.9 per 100,000 per year in comparison to females at 902.3 per 100.000 per year, although the difference was not statistically significant. As well, those ages 75 years and older held the highest rates of hospitalization for respiratory diseases at 4,886.9 cases per 100,000 per year. Interestingly, those ages 0-19 were the third highest age group to experience hospitalization rates at 1,157.3 cases per 100,000 per year.

Mortality

There was no statistically significant difference of mortality rates from respiratory diseases between Ontario and the NWHU, during the time period between 2007 and 2011. On average, the NWHU was slightly higher with approximately 48.6 deaths per 100,000 per year compared to 40.3 deaths per 100,000 per year in Ontario. During this time period, mortality trends were relativity consistent within the province while the NWHU experienced a gradual increase from 2008 to 2010 with a subsequent decline in 2011.

From 2007-2011, mortality rates in males were almost twice as high from respiratory diseases as in females (63.1 per 100,000 per year compared to 36.4 per 100,000 per year)
