Hypertension

Hypertension is a chronic condition in which blood pressure is persistently elevated.  Long-term high blood pressure is a risk factor for many sever conditions such as coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, and other conditions.

Hospitalization

From 2010 to 2014, the average rate in the NWHU area was 20.0 hospitalizations per 100,000 people per year, in comparison to 13.8 hospitalizations per 100,000 per year provincially. The NWHU experienced a steady increase from 2010-2011 and then a steady decrease from 2012-2013. There was also a slight increase in 2014. Rates in Ontario remained relatively consistent across the entire time-period.

On average, females experienced slightly higher hospitalization rates for hypertension at 22.4 per 100,000 per year compared to 16.8 per 100,000 per year for males, although the difference was not statistically significant. Hospitalization significantly increased with age, where the highest rates occurred among those 75 years of age and older (average of 128.1 per 100,000 per year).
