Chronic lower respiratory diseases

Lower respiratory diseases are diseases that affect the lungs, including bronchitis, emphysema and other forms of chronic obtrusive pulmonary disease (COPD).  The NWHU monitors trends in hospitalization and mortality caused by these chronic diseases.

Hospitalization

Hospitalization rates were statistically higher within the NWHU area than Ontario between 2010 and 2014. Rates in the NWHU were nearly twice as high as rates in Ontario as a whole, with the difference being statistically significant.

On average there was no significant difference in rates between males and females in the NWHU area.  Those aged 75 years and older were far more likely to be hospitalized in comparison to any other age group.

On average during this time, rates in males in the NWHU area were 1.6 times as high as rates in females, with the difference being statistically significant. The highest mortality rates were in those aged 75 and older, at 448.2 per 100,000 per year.
