Cardiovascular
disease refers to broad category that includes all diseases related to the
heart and blood vessels. It encompasses
cerebrovascular diseases, stroke, and other heart diseases under one broad
category. The NWHU monitors trends in
hospitalization and mortality from cardiovascular disease in the catchment area
Hospitalization
From 2010 to 2014, hospitalization rates for cardiovascular disease
were significantly higher in the NWHU area than in Ontario. The average rate
provincially was 728.9 hospitalizations per 100,000 per year, compared with 1,016.5
hospitalizations per 100,000 per year in the NWHU region. Both areas exhibited
a slight decrease overtime in hospitalization rates, with the exception of the
NWHU experiencing a slight increase only in 2014.
On average, males in the NWHU area were 1.4
times as likely to be hospitalized due to cardiovascular disease as females. Hospitalization
significantly increased along with age, where the highest rates occurred among
those 75 years of age and older (average of 8,423.5 hospitalizations per
100,000 per year)
