The COVID-19 Vaccine and what we know about its safety 

Although the COVID-19 vaccine was developed quickly, there was no fast-tracking the safety protocols that required for all vaccines in Canada. The process was able to be sped up for many reasons including: 

  • Using decades of data and research on other strains of coronavirus prior to COVID-19 (such as MERS and SARS). 
  • Advances in science and technology 
  • International collaboration among scientists, health professionals, researchers, industry, and governments 
  • Increased dedicated funding

April is Dental Health Month!
Teeth love healthy drinks: 

  • Choose Milk - it helps build strong teeth.
  • Choose Water - it’s nature's way of preventing decay especially when it contains fluoride.
  • Choose Less Sugar - high sugar drinks can cause cavities.

Say Yes to Veggies and Fruits ​
Choose fruits and vegetables more often than drinking fruit juices. When grocery shopping, choose fruits and vegetables that are on sale or in season to keep grocery costs lower. If you do decide to offer juice occasionally make sure it is 100% fruit juice with no sugar added. Avoid fruit or vegetable beverages, drinks, cocktails.

As the Snow Melts, Playground Season Begins… 

Here are a few rules for playground safety:

  • Wait your turn.
  • Slide down feet first.
  • Don't go up the slide ladder until the other person has gone down the slide.
  • Hold on to railings.
  • Sit down on swings and slides.
  • Keep away from moving swings and the bottom of slides.
  • Supervise your children while they are playing
  • Remove helmets, scarves and drawstrings before using the playground​ 

Tips for healthy parenting

School closures, working remote, physical distancing — it's a lot to navigate for anyone, but especially for parents. To help parents interact constructively with their children during this difficult time, WHO teamed up with the Parenting for Lifelong Health initiative to bring parents and caregivers a set of handy tips;

Create Your Emergency Plan 

Emergencies happen when you least expect it. They can cause power outages, property damage and even evacuation. To make sure you and your family are prepared, make sure you have an emergency plan. Your plan should include:

  • Two safe locations and how you will get to them. Include one location close by and one further away
  • A communication plan
  • The people in your support network including family members, neighbors, and health care workers.

Talking about sexuality

No parent is expected to have all the answers when it comes to talking about sexuality. Here are some good online resources where you and your child can get reliable information.

Good habits to prevent infections (including COVID-19)

  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, several times each day. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cough or sneeze into your arm.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Wear a mask when in indoor public spaces and when you can’t keep distance from others outdoors.
  • Stay 2 metres from those you don’t live with.​
