Public Health Emergencies

The health unit partners with all municipalities in the Kenora and Rainy River Districts with the distinct role of preventing or containing health risks. During an emergency, this includes interpreting health messaging for the public and helping people understand actions that will prevent risks.
During a disease outbreak, the health unit provides support and education in communities. The goal is always to keep essential services functioning while minimizing the number of sick, severely ill, or dying people.
The health unit has a mandate to implement action plans to meet local needs. Authority for determining who should get emergency vaccines or treatments rests with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, and decisions about products (e.g. vaccines) is the role of Health Canada.

If you need to contact the health unit about a public health emergency, such as an animal bite, food poisoning, a disease outbreak or natural disaster, please call 807-468-7109 or 1-866-475-6505 immediately.
