The following are smoking cessation supports available through the health unit.
Ready to Quit?
We are here to help! Health unit staff are trained to provide counselling and encouragement to people interested in quitting tobacco. If you are ready to make a quit attempt we can connect you to helpful quit resources and services in your community.
Brief Contact Intervention (BCI) training
The health unit provides a half-day BCI training workshop to community partners and workplaces interested in supporting tobacco cessation efforts of employees and clients.
Participants learn the skills required to discuss cessation effectively with people who use tobacco. It only takes a few minutes to help a smoker whether they are in the workplace as a client or co-worker, or in the community as family or friends. A brief intervention by a caring person with the evidence-based information learned at this workshop can significantly improve the chance that a tobacco user will make a successful quit attempt.
The instructor for BCI workshops are trained cessation specialist on staff with the Northwestern Health Unit. There is no fee for the trainer or the workshop materials however the host has to provide the venue and refreshments.
