Plastics

Public health inspectors at the Northwestern Health Unit can be a valuable resource regarding the use of plastics in contact with food. If plastic is used for an activity it was not designed for, such as heating of food in a microwave, the plastic can leach dangerous chemicals into the food.
 
Are plastics a health hazard?
The use of plastics in cooking and food storage can pose health risks.
 
 
Tips to protect your family:
  • Use plastics that are labelled safe for food (4, 5, 1, 2)
  • Don't use plastic the in microwave.
  • Use alternatives to plastic containers and bottles.
