Inspecting Food Premises

The Northwestern Health Unit is mandated to inspect food premises under Ontario Food Premises Regulation (R.R.O. 1990, Reg 562) and under this regulation, public health inspectors conduct inspections to determine compliance.

During inspections, public health inspectors determine the risk of all food premises. Food premises will fall into one of three risk categories: high, medium or low. How often a food premises is inspected depends on the risk rating which is based on:
  • Type of facility
  • Type of patron
  • Number of food preparation steps
  • Past compliance history
  • Food safety plans
  • Safe Food handler training of staff
Inspection results can be found on the Northwestern Health Unit’s ChooseWise page.
