Risks and Costs of Formula Feeding

The following are risks and costs related to the use of formula feeding for your infant.

  • Costinfant formula prices vary by brand, type and community. Compared to breastfeeding, the cost to buy infant formula and equipment adds up very quickly.
  • Preparation - contact your health care provider or public health nurse for instructions on correct preparation of water, equipment and infant formula.
  • Safety - There is an increased risk for incorrect preparation, causing contamination of infant formula.  There is also increased risk of infection, illness, allergy, SIDS and obesity when formula fed.
  • Environment - the packaging used for formula impacts the health of the environment and also adds to your family's costs for waste removal.
