Healthy Habits and Positive Parenting

Building a healthy relationship with your child will help you better understand your child’s needs, how they feel and what they are going through as they grow. A healthy parent-child relationship will help them build positive feelings about themselves, and get along well with others. These skills will help them succeed in school as well as at home.
Here are some ways you can work to build a strong, positive bond with your child:
  • Provide skin-to-skin time with your infant.
  • Offer your child security, let them know that you will be there when they need you.
  • Reassure and encourage your child often.
  • Do not force your child to do something they are not ready to try.
  • Never brush aside or ignore your child’s fears.
  • Ask how your child is feeling. Let them share negative and positive emotions with you.
  • Share your feelings with your child to help them learn healthy ways to express their emotions.
  • Understand your child’s temperament or personality. It may be very different from yours and that is okay. We are all different!
Positive parenting is a strategy parents can use to:
  • Create a stable home environment for their family
  • Teach children the skills they will need to meet new friends and get along with others
  • Provide consistent responses to problem behaviour of their children
  • Take care of yourself as a parent.
