Connecting with your baby

Deep emotional connection, or attachment, between a child and parent, caregiver, other loving adult and other people who care for them is very important. Attachment forms in the first few years of your baby’s life and continues as they grow to become an adolescent and teenager.
For a baby to grow, develop and learn properly they need to feel safe and protected. Healthy attachment with parents and loving adults will affect a child’s ability to:
  • Make friends and build relationships.
  • Confidently explore their surroundings.
  • Deal with problems and feelings.
  • Develop language skills and be successful in school.
Immediately after your baby is born health care professionals will encourage you to share skin-to-skin time with your newborn. The bringing together of a mother and a baby’s bare skin is the beginning of deep and lasting attachment between mother and baby. Learn more.
