Program Description The dental program offers: - School screening of all children up to and including 17 years of age, by a dental professional from the Northwestern Health Unit.
- Grade specific survey done yearly to aid in the planning of dental programs, to help build a positive dental attitude in children, to measure the effects of water fluoridation, and to aid in the follow-up of children needing urgent dental care.
- Preventive services that include cleaning of teeth, fluoride application, sealants and fluoride varnish clinics.
At the Northwestern Health Unit we offer two dental programs that provide free dental care to children and teens seventeen years of age and younger:
- The Children in Need of Treatment (CINOT) Program provides urgent dental care to children who are identified as needing treatment. This program provides fillings, extractions, and sedation. If your child has a toothache, bleeding gums, cavities, or a mouth injury, he/she may qualify for this program.
- Healthy Smiles Ontario provides a full range of preventive and essential dental care to children of low income families. This includes regular check-ups, cleanings, x-rays and fillings. If your child is a resident of Ontario and your Adjusted Net Family Income is below $20,000, your child may be eligible for this program. Visit the Healthy Smiles Ontario website for more information.
Contact your local Health Unit to find out if your child is eligible for one of our programs. Dental Clinics Preventive Services may be offered to your child as a result of their dental screening at school. These services may be provided at your child's school through our mobile clinics, or by appointment at your local Health Unit.
